A Monte Carlo shielding model for PET/CT clinics Robert L. Metzger and Kenneth A. Van Riper Radiation Safety Engineering, Inc Chandler, AZ Abstract Modern PET/CT clinics consist of a scanner room housing the double gantry PET/CT unit and a control area, two or more quiet rooms where patients rest prior to scanning, and a hot lab where doses are prepared. Of these areas, the scanner room, quiet rooms, and frequently the hot lab require structural shielding to protect staff and personnel in surrounding areas. The 511 keV photons from the PET positron emitting isotopes are the source term for the quiet rooms and the hot lab, while both the 511 keV photons and the polyenergtic spectrum of x-rays from the CT unit must be considered for the scanner room. We have developed a three dimensional model of the PET quiet rooms and the PET/CT scanner room for the Monte Carlo code MCNP Ver 5 , and for the Mercurad shielding code. The quiet room model consists of a MIRD phantom in a reclining position with 555 MBq (15 mCi) of F distributed in 18

A Comparative Study of the Construction of Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography Facilities in Three South African Hospitals

Introduction: Development of higher energy modalities such as positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT), has led to more complex shielding problems. This is due to several factors, such as the radiopharmaceutical relatively high-administered activity, high patient throughput, and high energies of 511 kilo-electron volt (keV) positron annihilation photon...

Performance comparison of four commercial GE discovery PET/CT scanners: A monte carlo study using GATE

Combined PET/CT scanners now play a major role in medicine for in vivo imaging in oncology, cardiology, neurology, and psychiatry. As the performance of a scanner depends not only on the scintillating material but also on the scanner design, with regards to the advent of newer scanners, there is a need to optimize acquisition protocols as well as to compare scanner ...

Layered Shielding Design for Pet Clinics

The number of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) centers has been growing rapidly. Many of the new facilities have been retrofitted into existing imaging centers and hospitals. Space in the facilities is often cramped, resulting in the hot lab, patient quiet rooms, and the scanners frequently being placed in close proximity to uncontrolled areas where non-occupational dose limits apply. Of part...

Radiation protection in Nuclear Medicine

In this paper the emerging critical point in Nuclear Medicine radiation protection are presented. Shielding issues regarding cyclotron installations, as well as safe delivery of radionuclides and management of gaseous effluents are addressed. Manipulation of beta and positron emitting radionuclides is also discussed, with reference to the problem of correct assessment of personal dose to the ex...

stimate bowtie filter shape in PET/CT scan with TLD

Introduction: The CT machine utilizes a bowtie filter to shape the X-ray beam and remove lower energy photons. Configuration of this bowtie filter is complex and its geometry is often not available in detail. It causes the CT dose index (CTDI) be with the different values in measurement versus Monte Carlo simulation studies and other analytical calculations. It is important esp...
